Postsecular society and religion:

On the necessity of interaction between social institutions

and religious organizations

The article substantiates the necessity of interaction between social institutions and offi-

cially recognized major religious organizations, as dictated by the secular processes tak-

ing place in the Russian society. The author considers the idea of rationalizing the rela-

tions between religious and educational institutions. The study shows the contradictions

inherent in the processes taking place at the same time in the Russian society: its further

secularization contrasted with religion becoming more and more relevant as people in-

creasingly strive to establish their religious identity along with their other identities, such

as ethnic, civil or cultural. The author suggests consolidating secular and religious

knowledge by means of introducing new subjects into the process of education, said sub-

jects dealing with philosophical and religious matters, in particular, the heritage of the

Eastern Orthodox patristics. The author believes that it should be possible to rationally

combine the study of original Russian religious values and achievements of secular liber-

al arts so as to bridge the gap between education and nurture, making up for the loss in

continuity of the generational social memory observed in Russia over the last several

decades.
