The study deals with the issues concerning methodology and methods of teaching general sociology in Russian universities. We consider one of the methods practiced in BMSTU during training of first-year engineering students, that is, the method of student essays, and emphasise their didactic significance and their role in the structure of education in Russian universities. We provide an analysis of student works and present the most interesting essays as far as their empirical research component is concerned.
