The paper considers methodological aspects of developing skills to analyze a fiction text, which is a means in storing cultural and socio-historical information about the country of the studied language for students specializing in linguistics. Its relevance is determined by studying the methods of text analysis as an element in developing the students' reading competence aimed at mastering the language internal form through understanding the meaning, sense, symbolic connotations and polysemy of the text itself. The paper demonstrates methodology of working with a fiction text using an example of the story “The Drummer Boy from Shiloh” by the American writer R. Bradbury. The proposed practice in the analytical approach to working with the text has a pragmatic focus and appears to be an option in analyzing the linguistic component in accordance with the subject matter of the text. The paper notes that deep analysis of the text lexical component makes it possible to identify the author’s hidden meanings that contribute to mastering linguistic picture of the world, linguistic consciousness and characteristics of the cultural space presented in the fiction text by the students.
