The paper considers features of the early stage of the 1920s — early 1930sSoviet historiography devoted to studying the peoples protest movement led by S. Razin. It analyzes works of the famous and little-known historians who studied this topic: N.A. Rozhkov, M.N. Pokrovsky, N.N. Firsov, V.M. Firsov, V.I. Picheta, G.V. Ladokha, B.N. Tikhomirov, S.G. Tomsinsky and others. The paper provides a general description of their concepts, and identifies advantages and disadvantages of their works, their contribution in developing domestic historiography on the Razin movement. It concludes on the general approach to developing historiography of the protest movement led by S. Razin, desire to identify the objective prerequisites of this movement, primarily in the socio-economic area not presented in the pre-revolutionary historiography. The paper notes that historians of the 1920s and early 1930s put forward a number of assumptions and hypotheses of interest to the Russian science. However, shortcomings of their works lied in using a conjuncture approach, as well as in the fact that they proceeded from the dogmatically understood and vulgarized Marxist constructions. They are distinguished by obvious modernization and ideologization in assessing the essence of the events described.
