The paper gives a brief overview of the phenomenon of Russian Orthodox fundamentalism, its essential foundations and evaluates its prospects. The study elucidates the main features of fundamentalism in general, and fundamentalist trends of the Russian Orthodoxy in particular, analyses the psychological bases of fundamentalist outlook. Findings of research show that, despite the presence of certain fundamentalist tendencies in modern Russian Orthodoxy, as well as individual outbreaks of sociocultural protest (for example, the scandal about the film Matilda), in general, the fundamentalist orientation does not play a primary role, and the Russian Orthodox Church disapproves of certain manifestations of fundamentalism
