Investigating the problem of the priority or non-priority of terminological lexis as compared to common one (on the basis of “welding” terminology in Russian and English)

The present article covers the problem of the priority or non-priority of terminological lexis as compared to common one in the Russian and English languages. As the example the author has taken an old well established terminology of "welding". Using the diachronic method of analysis we observed the postulate that the prescientific period of special lexis formation was characterized by the derivation of the craft meanings of the elements of the semantic field "welding" from such common meanings as "to cook" in Russian and "to spring, rise, gush" in English. At the same time during the scientific period the improvement of technologies was conducted at the plants and research laboratories, and so the names denoting them were patented and due to this fact it can be said that in the scientific period the appearance of terms both in Russian and in English preceded their usage in everyday language.
