The phenomenon of service to the Fatherland and the postmodernism paradigm: the problem of reality of patriotism

The paper determines a problem of interpreting the phenomenon of service to the Fatherland and its ideological content in the context of the postmodernism paradigm as one of the most influential areas in the modern humanitarian perception. It notes high significance of the socio-cultural phenomenon of service to the Fatherland in the Russian history and in the modern times, as well as the growing postmodernism influence in all the areas of culture. The paper shows that a clash of the phenomenon of service to the Fatherland with the postmodernism phenomenon is inevitable; however, certain consequences of this clash could be forecasted theoretically. Correlating the phenomenon of service to the Fatherland with the postmodernism paradigm involves posing two questions. First, to what extent it becomes possible to understand adequately the phenomenon of service to the Fatherland in the context of the postmodernism paradigm as a model in interpreting the reality. Second, to what extent it becomes possible for the phenomenon of service to the Fatherland to exist in the postmodernist reality. The paper notes that both the problems outline the epistemological and ontological aspects of the reality of patriotism and service to the Fatherland in the context of the postmodern paradigm. It concludes that the postmodern paradigm allows for a better understanding of the symbolic aspect in the reality of patriotism. Besides, the postmodernism paradigm is receptive to identifying various types of simulacra and simulation of the service to the Fatherland in the mass culture and political ideology. At the same time, a significant drawback in the postmodern interpretation of the idea of serving the Fatherland is the absence of the category of genuine being, and therefore a possibility of differentiating the authentic and inauthentic patriotism.
