The article studies motives behind the French soldiers and officers’ acts of vandalism
during the aggressive campaign to conquer Russia in 1812. The scientists reveal the
attitude of the French society and Napoleon himself to religion and the church on the eve
of the French revolution. The authors have come to the conclusion that the influence of
the French was predetermined not by disrespect of strange spiritual values, but rather by
the time and the environment which they had come from. This environment and time can
be referred to as – one word only – revolution.
