The paper analyzes the cultural (civilizational) code characterizing the nation as a community and considers its influence on the cultural identity of representatives of the autochthonous ethnic groups living in the unified territory. It shows that the identity problems are closely related to the issues of the national cultural self-awareness. In turn, the nation’s self-awareness is formed under the influence of a number of factors, including basic mythological and utopian narratives, as well as sacralizing features in historical development and traditions. The paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the structural elements forming the basis of the Russian identity. It proves that such important components of the domestic cultural/civilizational code as collectivism, imperial history and multinationality play a key role in formatting the value system of majority of the Russian population and influence the relationships in society as a whole. The paper notes that Russia is traditionally a multinational state and supports the right of small nations and migrants to preserve their cultural identity. However, differences in the cultural/civilizational codes could become a source of conflict and misunderstanding between foreign citizens and the local population.
