Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov and Alexander Karlovich Eshliman: the story of one photograph

The paper considers history of the Eshliman—Meissner engineering dynasty. It introduces in historical circulation the new historical sources related to Professor Alexander Karlovich Eshliman teaching at the Imperial Moscow Technical School (IMTS) in the 19th century. Based on the Eshliman—Meissners personal archive, the paper follows main stages in the Alexander Karlovich and his family biographies, as many representatives of the family are engineers. The research object is a family photograph. Novelty of the research is determined by its description and a complete list of people depicted in it as part of the delegation in the USA at the 1876 World Exhibition and based on the authentic historical materials stored in the library and museum of the Bauman Moscow State Technical University. Materials of the brief report on the trip to America of Professor A.K. Eshliman stored in the rare books department of the Bauman Moscow State Technical University were studied. Using the comparative-historical and retrospective methods made it possible to identify circumstances of the Russian professors’ trip to the Exhibition in the USA and demonstrate connection between generations in forming the engineering dynasties. The paper concludes that the 1876 photograph depicts employees of the IMTS: Alexander Karlovich Eshliman, Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov, Pavel Petrovich Panaev and Dmitry Konstantinovich Sovetkin.
