Anniversary of the “going to the people” motion appears to be a significant event in Russian historiography studying the liberation movement. Many works are devoted to the narodniks. However, assessments of their activities are contradictory. Thus, study of this problem is remaining still relevant today. The proposed paper provides a comparative analysis of the points of view of N.A. Troitsky and A.A. Levandovsky on the narodniks’ activities. It uses such research methods as analysis, comparison and synthesis. They most accurately reveal the problem posed. The paper novelty lies in comparing the opponent assessments of the problem under study and, as a result, in an attempt to achieve objectivity. The paper concludes that assessment of the narodniks movement by N.A. Troitsky seems more justified and objective.
