The Production-Practical Training Model at the Moscow Craft School

The formation of the practice-oriented model at the Moscow Craft School (MCS) — the predecessor of Bauman Moscow State Technical University — is examined. Based on materials from the Russian State Historical Archive on the organization of workshops, the development of production activities and the structure of practical training, the connection of the educational process with the needs of Russian industry is traced. Special attention is paid to the system of training mechanics and technicians, the use of production orders in the educational process, as well as the gradual strengthening of applied disciplines in the curriculum of students. It is shown that practical training at the MCS was not an auxiliary element of the educational system, but constituted its foundation. By the mid‑19th century, the institution had developed its own production‑practical model of training, combining education, work in workshops and the participation of students in real production processes. It is noted that this very system later became one of the foundations for the formation of the "Russian system of teaching crafts", which gained world fame in the second half of the 19th century.
