The activities of the gendarmerie administration and the security department of Saratov Province in countering the revolutionary movement on the eve of the First Russian Revolution are examined, taking into account regional specificities. Based on an analysis of scholarly literature and archival materials, the study considers the principal areas of activity of the punitive and security system, including overt and covert surveillance of politically unreliable individuals and the conduct of inquiries into cases involving state crimes, such as the dissemination of illegal literature, anti-government agitation, and the activities of revolutionary organizations. Particular cases from the practice of the province's political police are analyzed to illustrate the mechanisms of registration, control, and interdepartmental cooperation. Both the strengths and weaknesses of the political investigation system of the Russian Empire are identified.
