The article gives a detailed analysis of the sociophilosophical aspects of such complicated and ambiguous phenomenon as religious fundamentalism. We retrace the development of this movement not in chronological order as different fundamentalism movements appeared but as religious studies and political science comprehended fundamentalism as an independent phenomenon. The issue examines the origin of religious fundamentalism in the USA, the birth and the growth of Islamic fundamentalism movements and the fundamentalism development within other traditions. Its connection with politics and sociopolitical processes also is demonstrated in our research. Moreover, we explain the fundamentalism essence in the globalization process. The article establishes understanding of the fact that in general fundamentalism is not a synonym of traditionalism but one of the possible reactions of religious consciousness to the impetuous process of modernization.
