The nature of German colonist landownership on the Don before the 1917 revolutionary events

The paper considers German colonists, who settled in the Don region in the second half of the 19th century. They bought or rented land from the Cossacks and the peasantry creating the “subsidiary” colonies. Their land property was basically located in the “peasantry” areas. It was established that they preferred to buy land plots clubbing together, and they were able to turn to commercial banks or more prosperous Germans for assistance. Land supply of the subsidiary German colonies was much higher than that in the mother ones. It is concluded that it was this circumstance and readiness to take risks that allowed them to achieve prosperity in a short period of time.
