Caught Between Two Mills: Surrogacy in the Perspective of Christian Religious Ethics and Secular Law

Surrogacy is examined through the lens of Christian religious teachings and legal norms. Hidden contradictions arising from the clash between ethical-religious views and contemporary legal approaches are analyzed. Special attention is given to the positions of Christian denominations regarding the use of assisted reproductive technology for surrogacy, as well as to the identification of conflicts between religious canons and secular law. International and national legal practices in regulating surrogacy are discussed in detail, with examples from the USA, Europe, and Russia, highlighting legislative gaps and difficulties in law enforcement. The study demonstrates how differences in religious-ethical approaches significantly influence the formation of regulatory models — from total prohibition to liberal approaches. Possible avenues for mutual understanding between secular states and religious denominations are proposed.
